    Introduction to World Pencak Silat

    Pencak Silat is a compound word. Pencak and Silat have the same meanings and are parts of the culture of people of Malay race, that is, the ethnic group who are the native inhabitants in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.
    The word Pencak is commonly used by people in Java, whereas the word Silat is commonly used by the people who live in the other regions of Indonesia as well as in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.
    The combination of the words Pencak and Silat into a compound word was made for the first time when an organization of the unity of Pencak schools and Silat schools in Indonesia was founded in Surakarta in 1948, which called Ikatan Pencak Silat Indonesia (The Indonesian Pencak Silat Association), abbreviated as IPSI. Since then, Pencak Silat has become the official term in Indonesia. This term is also used by the schools in many different countries which teach Pencak and Silat derived from Indonesia.
    In the international communities, Pencak Silat has become the official term since the international federation organization was founded in Jakarta in 1980, which was called Persekutuan Pencak Silat Antarabangsa, abbreviated as PERSILAT, (The International Pencak Silat Federation). Nevertheless, people use the words Pencak and Silat separately as a single word due to the dialectic habit.
    Mainly Pencak Silat can be divided in to 4 main parts. It has 4 different fields.
    1. TANDING (sparing)
    3. REGU (multiple form)
    This is the main field of pencak silat. Here the players have to fight.They can use any technique which are allowed to use in pencak silat.The players will be given three rounds of sparing, each round is limited for 3 minits. But the time limit depends on the tournament organizers, in some tournament they arrange 2 minitues per round or 1 min and 30 seconds.For this fighting or sparing the players will be categorized according to their weight. Basically there are 11 classes. Which starts from class A Until class K. The classes will be categorized as following:-

    Arena and Competition Equipment
    The arena can be on the floor layered with mattress with maximum thickness of 5 cm, flat and non-bouncing surface. It can be covered with non-slippery cover with a measurement of 10m X 10m.The base color may be bright green marked with white line. The organizing committee shall provide this requirements.

    Inside the arena is a circle-shaped match ground of 8m diameter.

    The border between arena and match ground is marked with white line of 5 cm wide, drawn outwards.
    In the centre of the match ground a circle of 3 m-diameter is drawn. The circle’s borderline is white and 5 cm wide. This circle serves as a separating line at the start of a match.
    The Pesilat’s (contestant’s) corners are the arena square’s corners diagonally facing each other and separated by the match ground; these corners consist of:
    The blue corner located at the far right side of the Competition Chairman’s table.
    The red corner located diagonally across the blue corner.
    The yellow corners i.e. the two other corners, as neutral corners.






    2. TUNGGAL (single form)
    A pencak Silat compitition catagoty in which a Pesilat (one contestant)performs Jurus Baku Tunggal (single jurus) skillin a proper, accurate and stable manner with soulfulness, bare-handedlyand armed.Basicallly these performance is called as Jurus Tunggal.
    3. REGU (multiple form)
    A pencak silat competition category in which three pesilats (three constants) of the same team perform their skills in Jurus Baku Regu(Team Jurus) in an accurate, exact and stable manner,along with soulfulness and harmony, bare-handedly

    A pencak silat competition category in which two pesilats (two constants) of the same team perform their skills and demontrate the richness of their attack-defence Jurus techniques. The attack-defence movements are performed in a well planed, effective, aesthetic, stable and logical mannar, well organized, whether it is a powerful and fast ovement or slow and contemplative movement, bare-hardly and armd.

    Jurus TUNGGAL is one of the kind of TUNGGAL section in Pencak Silat.Also this form is called as Silat Senni.This form includes the fighting Technic by using weapons such as knife and stick.

    Jurus wajib is a kind of REGU, which is usually performed by three players.These three players should have the same physicle appearance and same spirit to do a successful performance
